Daily Dares: Days 55 - 59

  • Pass one French lesson on Duolingo each day
Still plugging away on these.  The lessons are short, so it's not been a problem to keep up with them.  I am surprized by the things I can remember!

  • Make 7 phone calls per week
So so.  I did make several calls this week, but still overall fail to do this.  I have even passed off the calling on car ads to Jacqueline.

  • Create a rabbit a day
I have still not finished my rabbit from the 21st as I have been working on other projects (which is why I feel I need to re-evaluate these dares, but that's for tomorrow), but have been managing to do this most days.  I have another big drawing started for the 24th, so I'll be skipping that day for now too...

Monday I was sitting there thinking, "What kinda bunny can I draw quick to post since I still haven't finished yesterday's!?" and my eye was caught by the Rainbow Dash that sits on the shelf over my desk that I got for Easter *just* before the Friendship is Magic series began.  She has RABBIT EARS!  So I decided I'd recreate one of my fave ponies using a base from Doll Divine's classic MLP Pony Creator. Thus Toola Roola with bunny ears was born:

Tuesday night I thought I'd draw a quick caricature of a hare, a little cartoony bunny... Um... yeah... have I mentioned I have trouble with that?

Wednesday I was busy sketching ideas for what I actually finished today, a recreation (2nd in the same week!) of a painting I did a while ago.  I never scanned the sketches from Wednesday, but perhaps I'll do that tomorrow...  Meanwhile, here is today's bunny frolicking with the goddess Ostara:

Wishcasting Wednesday

How do You Wish to Nourish Your Self?

Click to embiggen...

Nourishment.  Just about a month ago Jamie asked, "What Nourishment Do You Wish For?" And I wished for "the nourishment that comes from knowing the bills and needs can be paid for on time... for the nourishment of a minimum of $1000 per month in my bank account, and the blossoming and growth of a savings account."  This is still a nourishment I wish for, but I do not know how, so while I walk forward confident that the Universe will move me the right way and bring me the right opportunities, I will work on other ways to nourish My Self.

I wish to nourish My Self by eating right: low carbohydrates, lower calories, lots of vegetables, and fresh foods.

I wish to nourish My Self by creating everyday: This is not just a random goal for 2013.  I love creating!  It gives me so much joy & satisfaction to draw or paint or make a collage or sculpt something from clay...  It definitely nourishes me!

I wish to nourish My Self by moving more: I spend most of my time sitting drawing & painting, or on the computer, and don't often get up and move around.  I can feel it in my joints and I don't want to be all filled with aches and pains.  I wish to take walks, exercise, dance, stretch, do yoga...

I wish to nourish My Self by spending more time in nature: This goes with moving more, to get up and out of the house, and connect with real life...

And I wish to nourish My Self by connecting to others:  I want to spend more facetime with the people I love.  Less time losing myself on fb or tumblr or pinterest.  I have been doing more of this lately, and I hope to continue the trend.

Daily Dares: Days 51 - 54

I got frustrated.  I was trying to make one drawing *perfect* and it just wasn't going the way I wanted, so I shut down and didn't do anything.  This is no way to do a Dare.  I think this has been my problem with the phone calls as well.  I worry the call will be difficult, so I procrastinate and Busy Myself with other things, or work myself up into a frenzied ball of panic, and then shut down.

Also I have been *meaning* to break things into actionable steps, but haven't, so I still get overwhelmed really easy, and then shut down.  I think when I finish up here, I'm going to do 2 things. First break my list into actionable steps, and second look up some ways to work around my shutting down.

Here's how I've been doing:
  • Pass one French lesson on Duolingo each day
This I have been doing great on. Still want to do some more physical writing but I keep forgetting...  (See note about actionable steps!)

  • Make 7 phone calls per week
Blargh.  Not doing well here again.  Yesterday I did talk with 3 strangers, but via text & in person.  I think I may need to re-evaluate this Dare, determine the point of it all, and see if I can come up with a better way to accomplish the goal.

  • Create a rabbit a day
When I last posted, it was bunnies from the 16th thru 19th.  On the 20th I was still in a Merbun mood and painted this:

    Click to embiggen...

The 21st is the day I shut down.  I drew, but it wasn't coming out how I wanted, and before I knew it, it was way late, and I was tired and cranky, so I shut down.  I didn't even draw on the 22nd because I felt I needed to finish the drawing from Thursday, but didn't want to deal with it.  On the 23rd I realized that was just silly, so I moved on and drew buns for the 22nd & 23rd.  Here they are...

    First something colorful & happy!

    Click to embiggen...

This was just a scribbly bun again, but I added some colorization in PSP...  The bunny in the photo ref was sitting at a really weird angle...

    Click to embiggen...

Sunday, I got inspired again to draw something complicated and haven't had time to finish it, either Sunday or yesterday, and today has been a catch up day again, with a headache that's not really going away with Ibuprofen, so we shall see!

I think the important things I've learned so far and want to share here are...
  1. Don't be afraid to let go of perfection!  I wanted to do this daily thing PERFECTLY, every day, rain or shine, busy or not, no matter what, share a rabbit I've created.  I think that without getting ahead and scheduling posts for the future, this is doomed to fail.  Life does get in the way, and at those times I need to remember, it's ok to let the perfection go, and do it later.

  2. Make sure you re-evaluate frequently.  Yes, make big plans, set astounding goals, strive to attain them, but check in with yourself weekly or even daily.  How do you feel about it?  Still something you really want?  Then keep going!  Not feeling it some much anymore?  Then try to figure out why.  Why did you set that goal in the first place?  Is there another way to get there?  Maybe life has changed and it just isn't a fit anymore.  It's OK to let the goal go completely and find something new to excite you!

Full Moon Dreamboard

The Full Snow Moon asks:
“What desires lie deep within?”

Click to embiggen...

I used another old calendar page for this one, so right in the middle is an image by Christian Riese Lassen. I chose this one because it shows down deep in water, and it's teeming with life.  Dolphins and whales and lots of colorful tropical fish and on the shore, an amusement park and a burning bright sunset... This image alone does a good job of representing the desires that lie deep within me: fun, play, abundance, family, passion... But the white space around the edges allowed for me to add more!

The DARE down the left top corner is a reminder for me to continue with my word of the year, DARE: Do it! Assert yourself! Risk failure! Experience success!  The other words on the dreamboard are all self-explanatory.

The peony and spring flowers on the right represent my desire for SPRING and color, warmth and abundance, beauty and growth...

The kitty in the upper right corner, and the song along the bottom, as well as the painting of the fairy & bunnies near the lower left, are for my desire to have a small animal in my life again.  I miss my Bunny kitty so much and I think I've never been without some kind of small furry thing for very long....

The woman in the lower right corner has the hair color & style that I hope to have soon.

The tub, oh to sit and relax in a tub!  *Bliss*

And the colorful chandelier represents my desire for more colorful sparkly things in my life!

Sometimes we bury our dreams and desires deep within, as though hiding them under layers and layers of snow. Protecting them. Protecting ourselves. Waiting until the time is right for them to grow. Now is the time to tune into your heart, to let your intuition and your dreamboard express and reveal the dreams that are hidden inside. Let the creative process take you below the surface, beneath the layers of safety and protection, guiding you to the innermost dreams sparkling in your soul. ~ Jamie Ridler

Mosaic Monday Bunday

Welcome back to another Mosaic Monday Bunday! This week's theme is in honor of Pink Shirt Day, an idea that started with two high school students from Nova Scotia, Canada. They organized a protest to take a stand against bullying in their school, in particular the bullying of one freshman who chose to wear a pink shirt. Here is the story from the site:
“David Shepherd, Travis Price and their teenage friends organized a high-school protest to wear pink in sympathy with a Grade 9 boy who was being bullied [for wearing a pink shirt]…[They] took a stand against bullying when they protested against the harassment of a new Grade 9 student by distributing pink T-shirts to all the boys in their school.

‘I learned that two people can come up with an idea, run with it, and it can do wonders,’ says Mr. Price, 17, who organized the pink protest. ‘Finally, someone stood up for a weaker kid.’

So Mr. Shepherd and some other headed off to a discount store and bought 50 pink tank tops. They sent out message to schoolmates that night, and the next morning they hauled the shirts to school in a plastic bag.

As they stood in the foyer handing out the shirts, the bullied boy walked in. His face spoke volumes. ‘It looked like a huge weight was lifted off his shoulders,’ Mr. Price recalled.

The bullies were never heard from again.”
I hope you'll choose to wear a pink shirt this Wednesday, February 27th, and raise awareness about the bullying that takes place in not just our schools, but at work, at home, and online too.

Daily Dares: Day 47 - 50

Saturday we had our family Valentine's Day Party!  It was fun!  Emma & Scott came with Benji & Kuromi, and even Joseph came!  Everyone got valentines and there were delicious cupcakes and lots of pizza!

Sunday we drove down to Jacqueline's sister's for *her* Valentine's Day Party with the extended family!  More fun!  We got to see Emma & Scott & the grandkids again, and also Jacqueline's parents, as well as her brother & sister and their families.  It was potluck and there was a great assortment of casseroles and Jenny made lots of great desserts!

Yesterday JoAnn & I drove down to Syracuse to help Grandma Marti with the computer, and today has been a laid back relaxing at home kind of day...

But even with all that's been going on, I've been keeping up with my Dares!  Here's the list:
  • Pass one French lesson on Duolingo each day
Know what might help me?  1. Making a list of masculine & feminine things, and 2. writing out some of the verb conjugation; those are the 2 things I mess up more often than anything.  And also writing words down will the help me remember the accents.

  • Make 7 phone calls per week
Not *too* bad this week so far. 3/7 have been made.

  • Create a rabbit a day
This has been fun!  Sketching in places I don't usually, and coming up with stuff without any photo refs...  Sometimes it's great, sometimes it's disaster.  I'll let you decide which is which...  ^o^

Daily Dares: Day 46

Fishy sort of day... Crab dip for lunch, fish tacos for dinner... Oh and wait til you see the picture I drew!
  • Pass one French lesson on Duolingo each day
Today's lesson was HARD!  Still in conjunctions, but since there are several meanings for each word/phrase, it is hard to remember and know which one they are looking for.  And I am still messing up on the correct verb forms, leaving off the -s or adding it when not needed...

    New words/phrases:
    • or while this can mean 'gold/golden', as a conjunction it means 'and yet' - J'adore du vin, or tu bois mon vin. 'I love wine, and yet you drink my wine.'

    • du faire que 'since/because' - Elle est jolie du fait qu'elle est blonde. 'She is pretty because she is blonde.'

    • alors que 'even though/while' - Il est gros, alors qu'il mange des légumes. 'He is big, even though he eats vegetables.'

  • Make 7 phone calls per week
Start of a new week.  Last 2 weeks I have completed 9 out of 14 calls. None for today either.

  • Create a rabbit a day

  • Pass one French lesson on Duolingo each day
New words: sinon (otherwise), puisque (since), tandis que (while), and lorsque (when).  Also, I must remember that tea & coffee (thé & café) have the same accent on their Es...
  • Make 7 phone calls per week
    Eep!  4 of 7 on day 7 >.<

Daily Dares: Day 43 & 44

Lots of stuff going on, but even though I might not get to posting daily, at least I am taking care of the dailies!
  • Pass one French lesson on Duolingo each day
Still having issues with the masculine & feminine agreeing - actually, it's just remembering which things are which - but I learned some conjunctions.

  • Make 7 phone calls per week
    4 of 7 calls made

  • Create a rabbit a day
Yesterday's bunnies were some sketches for more bean buns.  I think I want to get some actual beans for beanbags, like styrofoam or something, to put in their butts so they stand up better...  ^_^

The Animorph Series

The Animorphs is a series of YA sci-fi books by K. A. Applegate that was published in the late 1990s/early 2000s.  The stories are told from the point of view of 5 young teenagers and one young alien, fighting a war against a parasitic alien race that is slowly infiltrating the entire human population.  Jacqueline read these books with the kids when the books were first being published, and recommended them to me.

I've been reading them slowly but surely for several years now and am finding that the series is much more than just superficially entertaining, but actually delves into some pretty adult morality issues.  It's not a bad series to read if you enjoy YA novels, science fiction, or alien stories.  There was a TV series also made, of which I managed to watch one episode before giving up (it's bad), as well as a video game or two.  Also, there are recent rumors of a movie; I hope so, because I think it could be pretty awesome!

But about the books... It's important to read the series in order of publication, and while the main series is the Animorphs, there were several supplementary books published that *are* discussed in the main series, and can leave you wondering what the heck they're talking about.  There used to be a list on Wikipedia that included ALL the books in the right order, but it seems to have disappeared.  (Although there is still a chronological list of when the storylines take place, it's not the order in which the books are meant to be read.)  So I have decided to do the necessary research to recreate the list, so I can finish reading without skipping any of those companion books, and since there may be other Animorph fans to come along, this is for you as well...
  • Animorphs 1: The Invasion
  • Animorphs 2: The Visitor
  • Animorphs 3: The Encounter
  • Animorphs 4: The Message
  • Animorphs 5: The Predator
  • Animorphs 6: The Capture
  • Animorphs 7: The Stranger
  • Megamorphs 1: The Andalite's Gift
  • Animorphs 8: The Alien
  • Animorphs 9: The Secret
  • Animorphs 10: The Android
  • Animorphs 11: The Forgotten
  • Animorphs 12: The Reaction
  • Animorphs 13: The Change
  • The Andalite Chronicles
  • Animorphs 14: The Unknown
  • Animorphs 15: The Escape
  • Animorphs 16: The Warning
  • Animorphs 17: The Underground
  • Animorphs 18: The Decision
  • Megamorphs 2: In the Time of Dinosaurs
  • Animorphs 19: The Departure
  • Animorphs 20: The Discovery
  • Animorphs 21: The Threat
  • Animorphs 22: The Solution
  • The Hork-Bajir Chronicles
  • Animorphs 23: The Pretender
  • Animorphs 24: The Suspicion
  • Animorphs 25: The Extreme
  • Animorphs 26: The Attack
  • Animorphs 27: The Exposed
  • Alternamorphs 1: The First Journey (This book is like a Choose-Your-Own-Adventure, making *you* the main character, and follows the timelines of the Animorphs #1 & #11 and is therefore *probably* safe to read after those two although I've not read it yet to be sure.) I *really* should have listened to Jacqueline when she said the Alternamorphs were not worth reading. Yes, it's a choose-your-own adventure book, but I have good memories of them from high school, and yes, it tells the same story, but I liked them the first time around, right? So how bad can it be?

    BAD.

The same story - actually TWO different books (about 150 pages each) - re-worded and paraphrased in places, so that *you* are the main character. It's all chopped up, diced and spliced, and reduced to a mere 115 pages. Also there is the assumption that you've read the original series (or seen the TV show) because there are whole parts that would leave someone new to the series befuddled & confused. Even having read the series, I felt befuddled and confused.

Had I not been bored out of my mind, with nothing else to do, I wouldn't have read more than 20 pages. I will not be reading the 2nd.
  • Animorphs 28: The Experiment
  • Megamorphs 3: Elfangor's Secret
  • Animorphs 29: The Sickness
  • Animorphs 30: The Reunion
  • Animorphs 31: The Conspiracy
  • Animorphs 32: The Separation
  • Animorphs 33: The Illusion
  • Animorphs 34: The Prophecy
  • Animorphs 35: The Proposal
  • Visser
  • Animorphs 36: The Mutation
  • Animorphs 37: The Weakness
  • Animorphs 38: The Arrival
  • Animorphs 39: The Hidden
  • Alternamorphs 2: The Next Passage (This is another Choose-Your-Own-Adventure-type book, that loosely follows the timelines of the Animorphs #20 & #26, and Megamorphs #2, and is therefore *probably* safe to read after those two although I've not read it yet to be sure.)
  • Animorphs 40: The Other
  • Animorphs 41: The Familiar
  • Animorphs 42: The Journey
  • Megamorphs 4: Back to Before
  • Animorphs 43: The Test
  • Animorphs 44: The Unexpected
  • Animorphs 45: The Revelation
  • Animorphs 46: The Deception
  • The Ellimist Chronicles
  • Animorphs 47: The Resistance
  • Animorphs 48: The Return
  • Animorphs 49: The Diversion
  • Animorphs 50: The Ultimate
  • Animorphs 51: The Absolute
  • Animorphs 52: The Sacrifice
  • Animorphs 53: The Answer
  • Animorphs 54: The Beginning

Whew! That was hard to do without getting any spoilers!  That's a LOT of books!  More than the Xanth novels for sure!  (Of course Piers Anthony doesn't have ghost-writers helping...)  If I've made any mistakes, or you have any suggestions, please feel free to comment!  And happy reading!  ^-^

Daily Dares: Day 39

Oh my gosh!  Tha day isn't over and I am donedonedone with my dares for the day...
  • Pass one French lesson on Duolingo each day
So thrilled!  Yesterday Jacqueline & I were talking, and I was wondering how to say that one has to or must do something in French.  I knew there was a verb that would go in front of the ... um.. infinitive form of whatever verb... but I couldn't think of what it was... TODAY I learned it!  YAY!  Devoir: Je dois manger mes légumes.  And I learned (or was reminded of) the verb to be allowed or able to: Pouvoir: Nous pouvons avoir la glace!

  • Make 7 phone calls per week
Oh yes, today starts a new week, so last week's total was 5/7 calls made.  However, I think I'll do better this week as I have a LOT of calls to make, that I was supposed to start making today, but got to anxious to do so...  :-[  I did manage to squeeze in a quick call to my mom this evening.  YAY!  ^-^

Daily Dares: Day 38

Good news and a longer than expected outing today means I didn't quite get to do everything I had hoped, but still not too bad!
  • Pass one French lesson on Duolingo each day
Did this early this morning, and OMG I learned a new word!  I don't ever remember learning *laquelle* which means which!  LOL!  Those were actually fun!  ^-^
  • Make 7 phone calls per week
Still holding at 5/7... um... I think I needed to make those 2 calls today.  I did plan to, but never found the time...  I'll have to double check later if I needed to make them by today or tomorrow.
  • Create a rabbit a day
I didn't draw a new bunny today, I did some sketching this evening, but not of bunnies, but this morning I did finish coloring one of my buns from earlier this year!  Here are 2 versions of the bunny I did on 01-22-13!  One with a plain white background, one with a sky...

Wishcasting Wednesday

I can't believe it's Wednesday already!  Time seems to be flying by me, I have so much I want to do and I seem to get side tracked by other things and have things take longer than expected...  Whew!  Anyway...  today Jamie asks...

What do you wish to work on?

Img Src
I think it interesting that when I went to flickr looking for a photo to use, one of the first that popped up was of a spider, "working on the web" (not the photo above, as it was not a Creative Commons photo)... Spiders are one of my totem animals.  They create, write, weave their future... and that's what I am trying so hard to do now.  I want to use my art, my creations, to build a better future, to change how I am living now.

I am already working on pushing past my fears and daring to take the steps toward that, but I think what I wish to work on is simply working harder on those things.  Not just harder, but smarter.  I need to create more actionable plans to get where I want to be. Then perhaps I won't feel like I am floundering so much.

You can be a maker of magic and a tender of wishes. It’s easy. Answer the wish prompt on your blog and then add a direct link to your post in the box [at the link] below. Daily Dares: Day 36 & 37

Yesterday I kept myself very busy with collaging.  So busy I didn't get to my dares until very late, so today you get 2 days in one!

Today I got to work on my dares straight away, and even managed to complete 50% of my 3 monthly goals!
  • I called the one local district I've not been getting calls to sub in, and was told that I *am* still on the list they've just not had much need for subs lately.  Relieved that I haven't done anything wrong, but still sad that I'm not getting called so much.
  • Tried to find a number for the personnel office of another local district that I used to sub in, but haven't in a few years, so I could see about subbing again for them, but was only able to find an email.  So I did contact them about that, but haven't heard back, so I am only considering it 1/2 finished.
  • I have begun to work on my final monthly dare, sending out subbing applications for more local districts, by gathering a list of the districts I want to apply to.
And as for my dailies....

Daily Dares: Day 34

Looooooong day!  We headed south to Syracuse to visit with Esme & Emma and got to see the grandbabies, then we headed over to an old family friend's to visit.  While there we got to watch all the commercials before Beyoncé's concert!  Sadly, after watching her very short performance, we had to head home... after a quick trip at the grocery store where we procured Ben & Jerry's Cannoli ice cream, which disappointed us all (so not as good as the Holy Cannoli used to be), Wegmans Peanut Butter & Jelly ice cream (omg still the best thing on the planet), and some rambutan, very cool to try, but not awesome.

When we went in to the store, it was cold but clear; when we came out it was just starting to snow!  And the further north toward home we went, the worse it got!  Yay for lake effect!  There were a few times I had to slow down to under 30 mph on the highway, but when we made it almost to home, the snow cleared up, but the streets didn't!  Again we were really shocked by how bad they let the streets get when the snow was expected.  Super Bowl Sunday or not they really should have been down the main streets at least.

Anyway...
  • √ French lesson on Duolingo
Did this before we left... Finally getting to the verbs etre & avoir, which I remember! ^-^

  • √ Call someone
Called my mom 2x and talked to a real person both times!

  • √ Create a rabbit
BOOM!  Did you expect anything less?  I could not resist the pun since I was drawing between commercials, and since the Ravens won, when I got home, I added the bunny's friend... ^-^

Mosaic Monday Bunday

Welcome back to another Mosaic Monday Bunday!  Today is my youngest daughter's birthday!  She turns 15 today!  D:  I know!  She's been living with me for more than half her life now!  I can't believe how fast the time has flown!  Naturally this Mosaic Monday Bunday celebrates her style...

Daily Dares: Day 33

Today was our monthly Family Day and it was also Imbolc & Groundhog's Day!  ^o^  So much fun packed into one day!

First I watched Punxatawny Phil do his prognostication and proclaim that we will have an early spring!  YAY!  Then we all headed up to Oswego to run some errands (library, shopping, lake viewing...) during which Lia performed a death defying cartwheel on snow-covered, ice-covered rocks! D:  And then we came home to a meal that was a little piece of summer: tuna-macaroni salad and hot dogs & hamburgers, broiled so they tasted like grilled, with all the toppings!  We finished the evening off with some fun games of Bananagrams & Catchphrase!

But I still managed to fit in my dares!
  • √ French lesson on Duolingo
    Perfect lesson!

  • √ Call someone
Called my mom, left a message, missed her return call, and called her back!

  • √ Create a rabbit
Since it was getting late, and I was realllly tired, my bunny is just a doodly scribbly kind of bunny...

Nous avons des petits poissons.

I think I'm going to draw to draw this one in PSP.  It's not the way I wanted it...  Do you ever have that happen?  You set out to draw something and it comes out completely different?  Happens to me all the time... XD
